China Inland Mission Boys! School
Chefoo Shantong China N.
August 14th. 1925 ;
My dear Dr.Andersson
I have to thank you very much indeed
for your kind letter of June l9th. and for the book of very
interesting photographs. They come like a whiff of good
old Kansuh. For some unknown reason the letter and album
took just about a month to reach here from Pekingll11] A
pity the"students"don't parade this sort of thing as another
little"insult to China's sovereign rights".
I am so glad to learn that your absence from
China is only a furlough and not a severing of all ties.
I do hope that both Mrs.Andersson and yourself will have the
happiest of happy holidays and that you will find China a
more settled country when you return... Things seem to be
quietening dovwm somewhat but everyone is apprehensive as
to what is going to happen when the schools re-open in
September. I understand the Chinese Government is in favour
of all schools(Government and Mission sechools)remaining
elosed for a year. I think this might prove a wise step.
I shall look forwarå very much to receiving the copy of the
Kansuh paper and thank you very much for go thoughtfully
arranging for it to be sent to me.
From all I can see so far, there is every
prospect of our remaining here till thebend of! the next
school year. i.e.July 1926,by which time two forms I am taking
will be through their Oxford Locals exem. After that I
"hope we shall be able to get back to dear old Kansuh., We
haveé a strong teaching staff here which is divided into two
main divisions.the"l00"per.cents and the"bluffs":needless
to say"yours truly" is the leader of the latter class.
Teaching is alright in its way but is not a pateh on"pot=
hunting". Bye-the way have you seen Langdon Warners
published accounts of his journey? I have read them in the
"Worlä's Work", He writes well.
Mr. Gibb paid a visit to Chefoo last week
and we had one or two interesting times going over old .
experiences. He is not looking as well as he did when on
the journey. I have had a letter from Pa Geerts, written from
Port Said. He writes that the voyage has agreed with him so
well that he had nöt had to wash his stomack out once since
leaving Shanghai... I wonder whether you will irhbärop across
him anywhere in Europe. Chan But To is comfortably settled
in Sianfu as Postal Commissioner there. Mr.Doodha goes on |
leave this Autumn. Luh Tuchuin has had a stroke which has
left him paralygsed down one side of his body. He seems to be
having hard work to keep things peacefulNX throughout the province
A letter received from Mr.Moseley a few days ago tells of
very severe fighting at Labrang.. Ma Fuh Hsiang and Ma Chi
supported by Feng Yu Hsiang are threatening to attack Luh
who finds an ally in Kong of Tsinchow. Just how events will
turn out is hard to forecast. I wrote the old man a long letter
yesterday trying to comfort his heart.
I am afraid there will be fighting between the
Kiangsu and CShekiang Tuchuins this Autumn.
Well I must draw to a close otherwise you will
tire with reading this long rigmarole.
With warmest regards to Mrs.Andersson and your
good self from my wife and self and with every good wish,
hoping to have a line from you whenever you can find time, .
I remain
Yours very sincerely
