amulett

- Object description
Heter Kekantong puser." (Generalkatalogen)
"The Balinese are never alone. Whatever they do and wherever they go, they are accompanied by their four elder brothers or sisters, the kanda empat, who were born with them: amniotic fluid, blood, navel cord and placenta. Together they protected the growth of the foetus in the womb; together with the baby they are now received as appropriately as possible.
The afterbirth (ari-ari) is by far the strongest of the four tutelary spirits that, with proper treatment, protect a person from disease and harmful magic throughout his life. Depending on whether it accompanied a girl or a boy, it is buried either to the left or to the right of the entrance to the house in a coconut shell with some earth soaked with a little blood and amniotic fluid." (Ramseyer, Urs. 1977. s.174-175)
