Object description: Bell krater. Wide mouth with overhanging rim; upper wall gently curving in above handles; rolled-back handles at upper body; lower body tapering to a short stem; groove at junction between stem and base; hollow disc base with convex edge. Red clay; black glaze. On inside of rim two reserved bands; on outside a reserved laurel branch between bands; A: to the left a naked youth, facing right, holding a discus; in the middle another naked youth, standing en face, holding a spear in his left hand and a jumping weight in his right; to the right a woman in chiton and fillet, holding a wreath in her right hand and a fillet in her left; B: three youths in himatia, the one to the left and the one to the right holding staffs; in the upper field to the left a set of stylised jumping weights; handle panels reserved; on both sides a border of meanders and saltier squares below figures; groove at junction between stem and base reserved; two reserved bands on edge of base; underside reserved.

Study Gallery

Description: Upstairs, in interaction with the Baghdad Cafe, opened in February 2009, the upper gallery. A rich variety of objects retrieved from the museum's storerooms, many of them shown for the first time. A series of booths filled to the brim with beautiful vases functions as a traditional study collection of ancient ceramics. Other booths highlights the thematic elements of the ancient world: the subject of everyday and festive, and images of gods, humans and animals.
