- Object description
- Bell krater. Wide mouth with overhanging rim; rather slender body, curving out above handles; rolled-back, horizontal handles at upper body; lower body tapering to a stem; grooved base. Pinkish to pale brown clay; black glaze; reddish brown wash; added yellow paint. One reserved band on inside of mouth and one on rim top; on outside a reserved laurel branch between bands; A: in the centre of the picture Apollon, standing in three three-quarter view, his head seen in profile; he wears a yellow wreath, a decorated cape, sandals, a broad belt with yellow circles and a richly decorated musician’s chiton with long sleeves, embroidered with stars, palmettes, chevrons, cable pattern and the picture of a figure on horseback; he holds his partly white kithara erect (by a strap around his left wrist), stopping the strings with the fingers of his left hand; he holds a plektron in his right hand; a decorated scarf hangs down from the kithara; to the right of Apollon a woman standing in profile, holding on to the kithara with her both hands; she wears a fillet, a stephane, a necklace, bracelets and a loose peplos; to the left of the god a woman, seen in profile, seated on a stool – details on the stool are marked with yellow dots or strokes of diluted glaze; her feet are resting on a small footstool; she is playing a small harp, and holds a plektron in her right hand; she wears a yellow wreath, a decorated chiton, bracelets and sandals; her hair is tied up with a yellow fillet; B: three standing youths in himatia; in the upper field to the right a pair of stylized jumping weights; below figures an encircling border of meanders and saltire squares; handle panels reserved; rays at base of handle attachments; below both handles a palmette within an arc flanked by flowers; two reserved bands encircling base; underside reserved.
