relief, bowl, plate

- Object description
- Round plate with relief decoration on both sides. On the front side are frontally depicted, schematically rendered busts of twelve naked figures (the Olympian gods?), radiating from a round section in the center of the plate. Nine of the figures are equipped with staff-like attributes, two have a small figure in between them. Two figures have long beards, two wear turban-like headgear. Also the underside has a round section (the sun?)in the center from which, alternatively, twelve rays and twelve winged figures with human heads and plant-like bodys radiate. In the center section, defined by a raised edge, is the word simboulion incised. The decoration possibly represents a hypothetical connection, based on astrological observations, between the Olympian gods, the twelve months, the twelve zodiac signs, and the orbit of the sun. Fine-grained, crystalline marble.
