Object description

Binding of reddish brown leather, front cover stamped mandorla with rests of gilding and a name is written with black ink in its’ upper part (Ridâ’ al-Nabîl?). Inner face of the upper cover has a stapt and show traces from worms and damp, the covers paperfilling is also visible.

Back cover, outside, stamped with a geometrical composition of fourpointed stars and hexagones. Inner side, arabesque pattern in lighter brown.

First page has an inscription (ref. comments). Frontispice, gilded frame, clouds in reserve filled with vegetal designs, 2a better finished than 1b. Paper is polished, some pages are colored in pale red. Pages adorned with gilded circular rosette medallions highlightened by red and blue dots. Circular gilded and geometrically ornamented medallions show the reader how far he has read saying, ruba’a (quarter), nusif (half) etc.

Calligraphy, clear, nice mamlûk naskhî, from the same hand. Black ink with red details. Head of chapters written in golden ink.

Colophon had gilded frame and half medallion.

Gift to the NM from KF through NMV. Purchased by the Crown Prince of Sweden during his stay in Cairo 1934. Registered the 12/7/1935.

Manuskript, 1432-38 e.Kr. Bindning av rödaktigt brunt läder, framsidan är stämplad mandorla med spår av förgyllningar och ett namn skrivet med svart bläck på dess överdel (Ridâ’ al-Nabîl?). Insidan av det övre omslaget har en stämpel(?) och uppvisar spår av ohyra och fukt, omslagets pappersfyllnad är också synlig.

Bakre omslaget, utsidan, stämplad med en geometrisk komposition av fyruddade stjärnor och hexagoner. Insidan, arabeskmönster i ljusbrunt.

Första sidan har en inskription (se kommentarer). Titelplansch, gyllene ram, moln fyllda med växtmotiv, 2a är bättre slutförd än 1b. Pappret är polerat, vissa sidor är färglagda i blekrött. Sidorna är prydda med förgyllda cirkulära rosettmedaljonger framhävda av röda och blå prickar. Cirkulära förgyllda och geometriskt ornamenterade medaljonger visar läsaren hur långt hen har läst genom att säga ruba’a (kvart), nusif (halv) etc.

Kalligrafi, klar, fin mamlûk naskhî med samma handstil. Svart bläck med röda detaljer. Kapitelrubriker är skrivna i gyllene bläck.

Kolofonen hade förgylld ram och en halv medaljong.

Description: Gustaf VI Adolf - Oscar Fredrik Wilhelm Olaf Gustaf Adolf - (11 November 1882 – 15 September 1973) was King of Sweden from October 29, 1950 until his death. He was the eldest son of King Gustaf V and his wife Victoria of Baden. Through his mother Victoria, Gustaf VI Adolf could claim to be the direct heir to Gustav IV of Sweden of the deposed House of Holstein-Gottorp (Swedish line) and the House of Vasa as well as the Bernadotte kings of Sweden.
He was born in Stockholm and at birth created Duke of Skåne. On 29 October 1950, he succeeded his father on the throne. His personal motto was Plikten framför allt, "Duty before all".
He married, firstly, Princess Margaret of Connaught on 15 June 1905 in St. George's Chapel, at Windsor Castle. Princess Margaret was the daughter of HRH Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of the United Kingdom.
He married, secondly, Lady Louise Mountbatten, formerly HSH Princess Louise of Battenberg, on 3 November 1923 at St. James's Palace. She was the sister of Lord Mountbatten and aunt of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It was Lady Louise who became Queen of Sweden. Description: The Islamic exhibition and Islamic art
The Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities also has the largest and only permanent exhibition of Islamic art in Sweden. The collection shows objects in ceramics, metal, wood and textiles as well as book illustrations and miniature painting. It elucidates Islamic art from AD 600 to AD 1900.
Islamic art is a world rich in shapes and colours both on the objects and in the décor. Arabesques and star patterns, calligraphic script, and the narrative pictures, illustrations to poetry, culture and science characterize the art. Islamic art and culture are heirs in southern and the eastern Mediterranean area to the Hellenistic, Roman, Persian and older Christian cultures.

Quranic manuscript in Arabic from circa 1432–1438.

Comments

This manuscript contains the main parts of the 11th and 17th parts of a Qur’ân divided into 20 parts, containing sura 77-79 (?).

The text on 1a mentions tha and says that this particular manuscript was given as a waqf from one of the mamluk sultans, al-Malik al-AShrafBarsbai (1422-38) to his mausoleom-Mosque built in the area of the caliphs’tombs outside of Cairo in 1432.

A description of the items aqcuired in Cairo has been established by Ph. Dr. C.J. Lamm.

Binding has been remounted, back not of very good quality. The quires containing frontispice and colophon have had margins remounted.
