Object description: Cast. Flat long, wide tang, rectangular in section, with two large rivet holes. Laurel leaf shaped blade. Line across shoulder shows where now missing hilt ended. Slight thickening of blade in middle with two wide incised lines (Moorey´s 'blood channels') on both faces from tang to near point, which is sharp.

Description: Ture Arne Johnson, born May 7, 1879 in Söderköping, died 2 August 1965, Swedish archaeologist.
PhD in Uppsala in 1914 with the thesis "La Suède et l'Orient, études sur les relations archéologiques de la Suède et de l'Orient pendant l'Age des Vikings". Arne's field of work was mainly the contacts between Scandinavia and the early Russia.

Condition

Line across shoulder where now missing hilt ended. Some bronze rot on green, jagged edges, intact.

Conservation - Executed

Cleaning and conservation report. D-nr 16455013, 950108. Condition: surface is slightly dirty with soil deposit. Part of the original surface is preserved in a medium dark green, smooth patina layer. Rest is less smooth, covered with grainy, hard corrosion in various shades of green and brown. Spotted with several larger warts, filled with unusual, bright yellow corrosion products, which appear to be active corrosion, and have caused considerable deterioration of the metal. Parts of the edges of the blade are mechanically damaged. Drilled to take sample for metallographic analysis. Treatment see MM Lur 2: cleaned mechanically with scalpel, small soft rotating bristle and steel brushes, under magnification. Active corrosion spots partially excavated to original surface layer, stabilised in 3 % benzotriazole solution in ethanol for 48 hours. Rinsed in 95 % ethanol, dried. Protective coating of 10 % Paraloid B 72 applied.
