MM 1961:020, cone

Description: The clay cone is inscribed with an inscription of Gudea, who ruled the city-state Lagash c. 2100 BC. As already noted for the clay cones (NM 2089, MM 1977.11, Békésy 184) which are from sites within the same city-state, this city-state consisted of the main cities Lagash (Modern al-Hiba) and Girsu (Modern Tello), as well as some other cities. In the publication by H. Steible, about 124 other clay cones, and 7 bricks with the same text are given. At least 69 of these clay cones and four of the bricks are known to have been excavated in the city Girsu (Modern Tello), but one clay cone is recorded as being from Uruk; all the others are without recorded provenance. The inscription deals with the construction by the ruler Gudea of the temple for the god Nindara in the city Girsu. All these clay cones were probably made in order to be placed in the walls of this temple. Of all the rulers of ancient Mesopotamia, Gudea of Lagash, ensi (governor) of Lagash, emerges the most clearly across the millennia due to the survival of many of his religious texts and statues. He ruled his city-state in Southeast Iraq for 20 years, bringing peace and prosperity at the time when the Guti, tribesmen from the north-eastern mountains, occupied the land. His inscriptions describe vast building programmes of temples for his gods. Translation: “For the god Nindara, powerful king, his king, Gudea, the ruler of Lagash, built his (= Nindara’s) temple in Girsu.”
