A.I. 1124, figurine, sculpture

Description: Chariot drawn by four horses. On necks of horses is laid a yoke with ends bent upwards connecting horses two and two. Breast-bands, which are placed very high up, are attached to the yoke; on the outer horses the breast-band continues along side of neck below belly. The chariot is high and rectangular in shape, open in the rear, with two plain, solid wheels with projecting hubs attached directly to the sides of the chariot. Between outer and inner horses on both sides are two beams attached to the yoke. The chariot rests on a central support, and at the back of the chariot is an erect support ending in a loop. In the chariot stand three figures. The left one in front is a warrior dressed in a conical helmet; vertical arms, square chin, pellet ears. The right one in front is the driver. He is dressed in a soft helmet with the top bent back and upturned cheek-pieces; pellet ears, square chin, arms outstretched, holding reins. The figure in the back of the chariot is of the same type as the driver; right arm rests on side of chariot, the left arm holds an uplifted, circular shield with spike behind the warrior. The group stands on a roughly rectangular tablet, with rounded back corners. Handmade. Brick-red clay, light slip, somewhat reddish.

Description: Hollow, cylindrical, wheel-made body. Sloping shoulders. Right arm lifted. Left arm vertical along body. Moulded head made separately. Marked, curved eyebrows. Prominent, almond shaped eyes. Prominent, straight nose. Oval mouth. Pointed beard. Large ears. Helmet and head in one piece. Pointed helmet. Red-brow clay, light-brown slip.

Description: Minotaur with short, cylindrical animal’s body (The centaurs from Ayia Irini are referred to as minotaurs by Gjerstad since they have human head and torso, and the body of a bull instead of a horse). Tail falling along right hind leg. Hollow legs tapering downwards. Two holes, one in front and one at back. Traces of genitalia above front-hole. Human cylindrical body with marked upper line. Arms uplifted, female breast in armpits. Triangular head with short beard. Open mouth with roughly shaped lips. Pellet ears, short, pellet nose. Projecting, oval eyes with ridged eyebrows. Conical helmet with nose cover. Hair plaits tied up around helmet and kept together in a knot on back of head. Two snakes coiling on animal’s sides, and up the back of the human body. Wheelmade body. Red-brown clay, black core, reddish slip.
