De män som drar båten kan vara bönder eller fiskare eller både och. Bönder hade en hög position i hierarkin, direkt efter samurajer, i praktiken var majoriteten av bönderna fattiga även om det också fanns rika bönder. Under senare delen av Edo-perioden (1615-1868) förekom hundratals bondeuppror pga de svåra tidnerna med naturkatastrofer, svält, epidemier och hög beskattning.

This sword guard, 8 cm in diameter, encompasses a world of differences between "high" and "low" in Japan. The men hauling the boat beneath the impressive fortress were perhaps peasants or fishermen or both. Peasants, in theory, were of relatively high social standing, directly beneath samurai, but in practice the greater part of the population lived in poverty. During the latter part of the Edo period, hundreds of peasant risings occurred on account of natural disasters, famine, epidemics and heavy taxation.
