Object description

Träsnitt av Isoda Koryusai. De sju lyckogudarna i nyårsskeppet. Flerfärgsträsnitt (nishiki-e). Hashira-e-format. H 63,3 cm, B 13,8 cm.

De sju lyckogudarna består av Daikoku, Ebisu, Bishamon, Hotei, Benten (gudinna), Fukurokuju och Jurojin. De har sina rötter i olika religioner så som hinduism, daoism, buddism och shintoism. Enligt folktron brukar de segla på ett magiskt skattskepp (takarabune) från himlen till jordens hamnar. Skeppet är lastat med skatter (takaramono) som består av symboliska saker, t ex en aldrig sinande portmonnä, nyckel till gudarnas koffert och osynlighetshatt. På natten mellan den första och andra dagen på det nya året kunde en bild av de sju lyckogudarna i skattskeppet läggas bredvid eller under kudden. Om årets första dröm var lycklig tolkades det som att det nya året blir bra. Alla lyckogudarna är specialiserade på att ge lycka, hälsa, rikedom och långt liv.

Föremålet har tidigare tillhört antikhandlaren Tadamasa Hayashi (1853-1906) respektive professor Oscar Björck (1860-1929).

Isoda Koryusai (1735-1790). The seven gods of fortune in the treasure ship (takarabune). Multicolour woodblock print (nishiki-e), hashira-e format. H 63.3 cm, W 13.8 cm. Formerly in the collections of Tadamasa Hayashi (1853-1906) and Oscar Björck (1860-1929). To the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities via the Nationalmuseum.

The seven gods of fortune were Daikoku, Ebisu, Bishamon, Hotei, Benten ( a godess), Fukurokuju and Jurojin. They are rooted in various religions, such as Hinduism, Daoism, Buddhism and Shintoism. They are popularly believed to sail on a magic treasure ship (takarabune) from Heaven to earthly harbours. The ship is loaded with treasures (takaramono) consisting of symbolic articles, e.g. a neveremptied purse, a key to the divine treasure house and a hat that makes the wearer invisble. On the night between the first and second days of the new year, a picture of the Seven Gods of Forune could be placed besides r under one´spillow. If the first dream of the year was a happy one, this was taken to presage a good new year. All the Gods of Fortune specialises in conferring happiness, health, wealth and longevity.
