Every object bears within it countless, crisscrossing stories of ecological connections, spiritual dimensions, political circumstances and personal fates in particular places. Essentially all of the objects in this section of Crossroads are archaeological.
The painted textiles were produced by anonymous artists approximately a thousand years ago. The designs are painted directly onto the cotton fabric with some type of brushes and pigment, probably in paste form. The Andean tradition of painted textiles extends back thousands of years. They were produced primarily for funerals and other ceremonial occasions.
