A bridge to the dream world
The traditional African head rests are used for sleeping, sitting and resting the neck. Both men and women use them to avoid ruining their hairstyles before various ceremonies, such as rites of passage from child to adult.
The head rests also have another function and meaning. The shape of the head rest forms a bridge to lead the sleeper into the dream world. In some societies, the dream is an opportunity to meet one’s ancestors. (Exhibition text, Existens 2024)
