Object description: Ostracon, irregularly shaped edges, fragmentary sketch on one side in red, black and white. Faint traces in red and black on the verso. The sketch shows a mouse, left facing, sitting in a chariot drawn by two horses. The mouse is outlined initially in red, then in black, and is wearing a pleated kilt with a line of black dots on it. The mouse is holding the reins with one paw, standing with its back facing the horses. To the right of the chariot are the hind legs and tails of two horses, outlined in black and coloured red. Mounted with metal pins on fabric.

Ostrakon, oregelbundet formade kanter, fragmentarisk skiss på ena sidan i rött, svart och vitt. Svaga spår i rött och svart på baksidan. Skissen visar en mus, vänd åt vänster, som sitter i en stridsvagn dragen av två hästar. Musen är ursprungligen konturerad i rött, sedan i svart och bär en veckad kjol med en linje av svarta prickar på. Musen håller tyglarna med ena tassen, ståendes med dess rygg vänd mot hästarna. Till höger på vagnen finns bakbenen och svansar av två hästar, konturerade i svart och färgade rött. Monterad med metallnålar på tyg.; Konstnärsskiss, ostraka.

Gayer-Anderson, Robert Grenville

Description: Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson, Major, after qualifying as a Doctor at Guy's Hospital, became an officer in the Royal Army, Medical Corps. He received his commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1903. He was lent to the Egyptian Government in 1905 by the British Government and spent the rest of his carrier in service of Egypt, in both military and civil capacities, reaching the rank of "Lewa" (Major General) and having the title of Pasha conferred upon him. He collected Egyptian objects of great significance. They are preserved in Gayer-Anderson Pasha museum in Cairo. He is the author of "Legends of the Bait al-Kretliya" (Luzac, London) and Christeros, poems (Wilding, Shrewsbury). He died in Lavenham in 1945. (www.indianminiature.org, 2012-08-31)

Things were – and should be – as they always had been.
Old traditions and ways of thinking lived on, long after the last pharaohs.
They were present in the customs and traditions of the Middle Ages and are present in Egypt today.

Egypten, 1982-2012

Description: The Egyptian exhibition shows various aspects of life in Pharaonic Egypt from 3000 BC to the Christian era. There are also many objects from the prehistoric period, starting around 5000 BC. Most of the objects came to Sweden in the late 19:century, and have been donated to the museum from private collections.
The Egyptian Exhibition contains, in addition to mummified humans, also mummies of cats, birds, fishes and snakes. The Goddess Isis with the child Horus in her lap meets the visitors as they enter the exhibition. The pose she holds occurs commonly in western art where the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus often is portrayed in the same position.
A portrait of the well-known pharaoh Sesostris was donated to Sweden by the Egyptian government in recognition both of Swedish participation when the Assuan-dam was built and of professor Torgny Säve-Söderbergh as an internationally well-known Egyptologist. (www.medelhavsmuseet.se, 2010-09-01)
The exhibition was made already in 1982. In 2002 there was a change, several of the galleries (4-8) on the upper floor were closed.
