Object description

Manuscript of the The Rawzat al-Ahbâb fî siyâr al-Nabî wa al-Âhl wa al-Ashâb (the garden of the beloved in the history of the prophet his family and his companions). Envelope binding of dark red leather with a stamped gilded medallion decoration. 436 folios of polished paper of medium quality, a stencil of 21 lines of nasta’liq written with black ink within a blue and golden frame. Double frontispice reglued on the first two folios, seven lines of nasta’liq in golden cloud frames the rest in divided in geometrical unities with an alternately blue-lapis or golden background, flower vines in white or green and red, white, pink flowers, green leaves.

Ten miniatures with scenes from the life of the prophet and one stylistic drawing of the prophets’ sandal (na’al).

Békésy, Georg von

Description: <space><space><space><space>During his lifetime, Bekesy collected a large number of
works of art and rare books. Many were lost in World War I,
others in World War II, and some were destroyed or damaged
as a result of a fire in Memorial Hall at Harvard. In spite of all
this, the collection gradually grew larger and more varied. But
the collection was almost as private as was Bekesy's personal
life—few persons were ever privileged to see more than a mere
fragment of it. Now, however, it is in the public domain. In his
last will and testament, Bekesy chose to honor the Nobel
Foundation, which had earlier bestowed such great honor upon
him, with a gift of that which was closest and dearest to him—
the art objects that he had collected over the years and that had
been both a source of inspiration in his work and a source of
solace for a lonely man in times of need of comfort. The Georg
von Bekesy Collection of Art was placed on public exhibition
for the first time, by the Nobel Foundation, on December 9,
1974. His collection of books is now in the Library of the

Description: The Islamic exhibition and Islamic art
The Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities also has the largest and only permanent exhibition of Islamic art in Sweden. The collection shows objects in ceramics, metal, wood and textiles as well as book illustrations and miniature painting. It elucidates Islamic art from AD 600 to AD 1900.
Islamic art is a world rich in shapes and colours both on the objects and in the décor. Arabesques and star patterns, calligraphic script, and the narrative pictures, illustrations to poetry, culture and science characterize the art. Islamic art and culture are heirs in southern and the eastern Mediterranean area to the Hellenistic, Roman, Persian and older Christian cultures.
The museum’s Islamic exhibition and extensive program activity aim to provide valuable knowledge for the understanding of Islam in Sweden – and in the world - today. (www.medelhavsmuseet.se, 2010-09-08)
