Object description: Fragment of decorative band, colours blue, white and red. Repetitive pattern of an animal (probably a hare), enclosed by decorative leaves, one above and one below the animal, the design forms a chainlike pattern. By each of the animals' mouths there is a red dot (possibly depicting a tongue or a grape). Above and below the chainlike pattern there is a straight thin band.

Fragment av dekorativt band, blå, vit och röd färg. Repetitivt mönster av ett djur (troligen en hare) omsluten av dekorativa blad, ett ovanför och ett under djuret, designen bildar ett kedjeliknande mönster. En röd prick (möjligen föreställande en tunga eller en druva) finns vid var och en av djurets mun. Ovanför och under motivet finns ett rakt tunt band.

Comments

In pharaonic Egypt the hare was a symbol of death and renewal, of eternal life. The Egyptians believed that the hare slept with its eyes open, it was therefore also a symbol of vigilance. The hare nibbling on grapes became a Dionysian symbol of fertility and eternity during late antiquity.
