Object description: Ett par strumpor i vadderad bomull, som på koreanska heter beoseon. Sömmarna är handsydda. Dessa Beoseon har rundade hälar och ett uppåtgående tåparti. Den här typen av strumpor bars av både kvinnor och män i Korea från och med Goryeo (918-1392). De bars inte bara i skyddande och värmande syfte utan också, på grund av deras vackra form, som utsmyckning. Beoseon för barn och sådan som användes vid ceremonier har också färgglad brodyr och dekorband.

Korea under Japanese rule (1910 – 1945)

Beskrivning, engelska: Japan had long coveted control over Korea, as it was seen as a stepping stone that gave Japan access to the rest of Asia. Following the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1876, which was the first of several unequal treaties that made Korea vulnerable to Japanese influence, the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1905 made Korea a protectorate of Japan. Korea was then annexed to Japan after the Japan-Korea Treaty of 1910. The Korean independence movement started in the early 20th century and was sustained throughout Japanese rule. The March 1st Movement of 1919 had a far-reaching impact, initiating nationwide marches and demonstrations. The oppression intensified as Japan made Korea its supply base for the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and the Pacific War in 1941. Korean language and names were suppressed from 1938 and Koreans were mobilised to serve on the front lines as soldiers and labourers. Many atrocities were committed by Japan, including sexual slavery, forced labour and human experimentation, before and during World War II. Korean independence was finally achieved on August 15th, 1945, after Japan surrendered to Allied forces and with the help of the existing independence movement.
Korean painting, since the late 1920s, endeavoured to create a unique Korean style and also looked to Western painting for inspiration. The first modern archaeological excavations carried out in Korea was under Japanese rule. The interpretation of the past was used to justify Japanese rule of Korea. Many important objects of Korean heritage were also destroyed or looted and taken to Japan during this period.
Beskrivning, korea: 일본은 아시아 지역을 정복하여 패권을 잡기 위한 발판으로 한국에 대한 지배 야욕을 오랫동안 드러냈다. 1876년 일본은 강화도조약을 강압적으로 체결한 것을 시작으로 1905년 을사조약으로 외교권을 박탈하고 끝내는 1910년 한일합병조약을 또한 체결하여 한국의 국권을 강탈하였다. 이로써 한국은 일본의 통치 하에서 정치, 군사, 경제, 사회, 문화, 예술 등의 모든 면에서 자주권을 상실했다. 한국민의 독립운동은 20세기 초부터 시작하여 일제강점기 내내 지속되었다. 1919년 3·1운동은 그 파급력이 커 이를 계기로 국내외에서 전민족적인 독립만세시위가 전개되었다. 그러나 일본은 1937년 중일전쟁과 1941년 태평양전쟁을 위해 한국을 병참기지화하면서 한국민족 말살정책과 식민지 수탈정책을 강화하였다. 1938년부터 한국인들은 한국어와 한국 이름의 사용까지 금지당했다. 또한 일본은 제2차세계대전이 종료되기 전까지 한국인들을 강제 징병하여 최전방으로 내몰고 민간인들을 징용하여 무보수 노예노동을 강요하였으며 온갖 불법적 방법으로 나이를 불문하고 여성을 일본군위안부로 징집하였을 뿐 아니라, 생체실험에까지 동원하였다. 이러한 일본의 폭력과 억압에 대항하여 한국인들은 지속적인 독립운동을 펼쳤고 결국 일본이 연합국에 항복함으로써 1945년 8월 15일 한국은 해방을 맞이했다.
1920년대 말부터 한국의 화단에서는 한국 회화만의 독특한 화풍을 창조하기 위한 노력과 서양 회화에서 영감을 얻기 위한 연구의 움직임이 함께 일어났다. 한편, 한국에서의 근대식 고고학적 발굴은 일제강점기 때 처음으로 이루어졌으며, 한국에 대한 일본의 침략과 지배를 정당화하기 위하여 일본은 식민사관을 발전시키고 주장했다. 이 시기에는 또한 일본에 의해 수많은 한국의 문화재들이 훼손되고 불법 반출되었다.

Samlingar från Korea

Beskrivning: Östasiatiska museets koreanska samling består av 510 föremål och fragment, samt 29 fotografier, och täcker ett tidsspann som sträcker sig från De tre kungarikenas tid (57 f. Kr – 668 e. Kr) fram till 1900-talet. Samlingen innehåller huvudsakligen keramik och metallföremål, men även ett antal målningar, kalligrafier och frottagemålningar, möbler i trä, textilier samt några lackarbeten och föremål i glas och sten. Grunden till samlingen består av föremål som donerades av kung Gustaf VI Adolf; den första officiella person i Sverige att intressera sig för koreansk konst och arkeologi. Han besökte Korea 1926 och gav under sin livstid ett antal föremål till museet. Fler föremål testamenterats sedan som gåva. Den största delen av den koreanska samlingen består av föremål som museet införskaffade under 1970- och 1980-talet genom inköp och gåvor från läkare och sjuksköterskor som arbetat på det svenska Röda korsets sjukhus i Busan under och efter Koreakriget (1950-1953), samt från svenska diplomater och affärsmän.

This object is a pair of white lined and padded cotton socks, in Korean called beoseon. The seams are hand-stitched. These beoseon have round heels and upturned toes. This type of beoseon were worn in Korea by men and women alike starting from the Goryeo period (918-1392). They were not only worn for protection and for keeping the feet warm, but also as adornment due to their beautiful shape. Beoseon for children and for ceremonial attire also feature colorful embroidery or decorative bands.

흰색의 무명 혹은 광목으로 만든 겉감과 안감 사이에 솜을 넣은 솜버선으로, 손바느질로 솔기를 꿰맸다. 뒤축이 둥글게 굴려졌고 앞에 튀어 나온 버선코는 살짝 올라갔다. 고려시대부터 남성과 여성 모두 이러한 종류의 버선을 착용하였다. 솜버선은 방한(防寒) 뿐만 아니라 맵시를 내는 데 목적이 있었으며, 예복용이나 어린이를 위한 버선은 색실로 수를 놓거나 끈을 달아 장식했다.
