Object description: This is of course not of horn but of the subcutaneous fatty tissue of the cow. The technique is called tandu and is fully decribed by Henry Balfour In Essays Presented to C.G. Seligman, 1934. NO. 226 is so similar in form and decoration to Balfour´s Plate I, fig. 14, that it was probably made at the same place; Balfour´s piece was collected by Lord Rennell of Rodd in 1922 from the Taureg of Agades, Air, but I am not sure whether the designs are Tuareg or whether it is likely to have been imported from the Hausa.
