Object description: A necked vessel with an inverted piriform body, modelled rim, tapering to a narrow flat base and three, thin triangular handles. White, grey surface with an exterior decoration in maroon. It features six rows of horizontal wavy lines from the neck down to the handles. Below follows a register of carefully and vivaciously animated characters. There are four rams, five figurines, wearing long dresses and arms raised above their heads and additional four rams and one flamingo. Above one ram are five S-signs. Below these figures is, a circumscribing row of hills.

Ett kärl med hals och en omvänt päronformad kropp, modellerad kant, avsmalnande mot ett platt botten och tre, tunna triangulära handtag. Vit, grå yta med en yttre dekoration i mörkrött. Den framställer sex rader av horisontella våglinjer från halsen ner till handtagen. Under följer register av försiktigt och livligt animerade figurer. Det finns fyra gumsar, fem figuriner som bär långa klänningar och med armarna upphöjda ovanför deras huvuden, ytterligare fyra gumsar och en flamingo. Ovanför en gumse finns fem S-tecken. Gayer-Anderson, Robert Grenville

Description: Robert Grenville Gayer-Anderson, Major, after qualifying as a Doctor at Guy's Hospital, became an officer in the Royal Army, Medical Corps. He received his commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1903. He was lent to the Egyptian Government in 1905 by the British Government and spent the rest of his carrier in service of Egypt, in both military and civil capacities, reaching the rank of "Lewa" (Major General) and having the title of Pasha conferred upon him. He collected Egyptian objects of great significance. They are preserved in Gayer-Anderson Pasha museum in Cairo. He is the author of "Legends of the Bait al-Kretliya" (Luzac, London) and Christeros, poems (Wilding, Shrewsbury). He died in Lavenham in 1945. (www.indianminiature.org, 2012-08-31)

Description: The history of Egypt is long, from the first settlements in the Nile Valley around 7000 years ago to the present day. Egypt was for a long period of time ruled by autocratic kings – the pharaohs. At other times, it was part
of larger empires such as the Persian, Roman and Ottoman.
The pharaonic culture was characterised by high conservatism.
Things were – and should be – as they always had been.
Old traditions and ways of thinking lived on, long after the last pharaohs.
They were present in the customs and traditions of the Middle Ages and are present in Egypt today.
Welcome on a walk through the history of Egypt!

Egypten, 1982-2012

Description: The Egyptian exhibition shows various aspects of life in Pharaonic Egypt from 3000 BC to the Christian era. There are also many objects from the prehistoric period, starting around 5000 BC. Most of the objects came to Sweden in the late 19:century, and have been donated to the museum from private collections.
The Egyptian Exhibition contains, in addition to mummified humans, also mummies of cats, birds, fishes and snakes. The Goddess Isis with the child Horus in her lap meets the visitors as they enter the exhibition. The pose she holds occurs commonly in western art where the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus often is portrayed in the same position.
A portrait of the well-known pharaoh Sesostris was donated to Sweden by the Egyptian government in recognition both of Swedish participation when the Assuan-dam was built and of professor Torgny Säve-Söderbergh as an internationally well-known Egyptologist. (www.medelhavsmuseet.se, 2010-09-01)
The exhibition was made already in 1982. In 2002 there was a change, several of the galleries (4-8) on the upper floor were closed.

dans eller segeryra. Under dem finns pyramidformade berg och runt krukan en

rad antiloper. Längst upp finns rader av våglinjer som kan föreställa vatten.
